Bal, affectionately known as “Gudda” in the industry, was admitted to Aashlok Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday, where he passed away on Friday. His sudden demise has left the fashion world mourning the loss of a visionary talent.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) paid tribute to Bal on Instagram, commemorating his legacy as a pioneering designer and a founding member of the council. Known for his exquisite blend of traditional Indian patterns with contemporary aesthetics, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, setting a standard that inspired generations. FDCI’s heartfelt post stated, “We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal… His legacy of artistry, innovation, and forward-thinking will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace, Gudda.”
FDCI President Sunil Sethi confirmed Bal’s passing and noted that the cremation would take place on Saturday. Sethi shared his personal sentiments, describing Bal as a “legend” and acknowledging the shock within the fashion community over the sudden loss.
Rohit Bal was born in Srinagar and began his journey in the fashion industry in 1986. Over the decades, he became one of India’s most iconic designers, earning accolades that included “Designer of the Year” at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006 and the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Award in 2001. He also held the title of Lakme Grand Finale Designer in 2012.
Despite health challenges, Bal made a triumphant return to the runway at the Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI grand finale last month, showcasing his latest collection, “Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe.” The show’s finale featured Lakme’s brand ambassador, actress Ananya Panday, who donned one of Bal’s signature creations, embodying his distinctive aesthetic and meticulous craftsmanship.
